Daily Painting on Sale, Small Oil Painting, Daily Painter, "Apple on the Tree", Carol Schiff artist, 6x8" Original oil

I never know what genre a painting like this falls into.  Is it a landscape?  Is it a still life?  I think it may be a landscape because it has not been "arranged".

This apple is from my favorite orchard in North Carolina, just outside of Waynesville.  Most of the year it is very quite there, but in the fall, it is the place to be.  The orchard also has a bakery and long, long lines exist all day, every day.  I have stood in line many times myself to buy their delicious apple cider donuts or cakes, fritters and pies.

Thank you for reading my blog today.

Flower Painting, Daily Painting, "Peony and Pitcher" by Carol Schiff, 8x6" Oil SOLD

It has been a long, cold winter and I was ready for a little escape. A flower painting seemed like just the thing!

I found an image of peonies from my garden and started painting.  I used all my favorite colors of pinks, purples, corals and blues.  The more I painted, the happier I felt.

Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, Orchid Painting, "The Perfect Gift", 6x8 Florial Still Life

Well, for me, this orchid was the perfect gift, from my dear friend.

I wanted to paint it, so I set it in front of a north facing window, allowing natural light to flow in behind it.

The composition was a little tricky, but I think I pulled it off okay.  I really enjoyed painting this one.  I just set back and relaxed, and before I know it, I had completed this sweet little piece.

I almost always show my paintings in a simple black frame.  I don't want the frame to distract from the artwork and I think it makes the colors really pop.

Thanks, for reading my blog today.   Don't forget to water your plants!

Vegetable Still Life, Daily Oil Painting, "Ravanello Danza"

The past few months, I have been painting landscape after landscape.  I noticed that most of my favorite still life works have found new homes.

So this week, I have been painting new ones.  It has been a nice change of pace for me.

These radishes seemed to be involved in a complicated tango, so I named this "Ravanello Danza" which is Italian for Radish Dance.  It sounds much better in Italian.

Vegetable Still Life, Red Pepper Painting, "Big Red" by Carol Schiff, 20x24x1.5" Oil

It has been some time since I have painted a vegetable still life, so I decided to try one this week.  In the past I painted every fruit and vegetable you could imagine, but they were small pieces, usually 6x8" or smaller.

This one is actually 20x24" and painted with a combination of palette knife and brush.  You will notice with this next image below, that the the background is actually more gray green than the blue shad above.  I must have taken 20 photos of this, trying to get the colors correct, but in the end I had to choose between the bluish background and the front end of the pepper turning a garish orange mustard hue. Yuck!  At any rate, the photo below seems quite accurate in both places.

Thank you for viewing my blog today.  I hope you enjoy this vegetable still life painting.  Give it a pin!

Small Rose Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, "A Rose by Any other Name", 6x8" Oil

This is my third in a series of rose studies, worked with a palette knife.  I enjoy working with a knife to get the texture and feel I am trying to convey to the viewer.

The texture of the knife makes me want to reach out and touch the painting, a big no no in galleries and museums, but a feeling I would like to convey to the viewer.

I am trying to bring a larger variety of marks to my palette knife paintings to give them more interest and variety.  I am finding it is hard to break old habits.  To me, the joy of painting, and the frustration of painting, come from a constant effort to improve.

Have a wonderful day!

Still Life Daily Painting, Wine Bottles

One of my favorite times of the day is late evening when I can grab that book or turn on the television to my favorite show and relax with a nice glass of wine.

I set some bottles up in the window sill to get the back lighting, and also got a nice reflection under one of the bottles.  When I started digging through my canvases, I found a 6x12" which was perfect for the composition.

The perfect kitchen decor!

Pear Still Life Painting, Daily Painting, "Pink Pear" by Carol Schiff, 5x7" Oil

I painted this pear still life a few years ago and recently found it my studio.  It was a fun piece to do.  I wanted to experiment with color and bold negative shape.

I placed the pear on a window sill with strong sunlight pouring in behind it.  Then the fun started.  I took a photo, uploaded it and started playing with color and contrast on the screen.  A great exercise, give it a try some time

FUN FACT:  35% of people are born without wisdom teeth.

Have a great day....paint a pear still life!
